Effects of using Anti-Dandruff Shampoo – Should one use them for the long term?
Having dandruff has become a common issue nowadays. Due to our hectic routine, all we can do is to use an anti-dandruff shampoo to avoid scalp flaking of dandruff and its display for falling off on our shoulders. However, we need to remember that using dandruff-resistant shampoos for a long time comes with a price that might surprise you. There are so many brands of ant-dandruff shampoos available in supermarkets, drug stores, and even alleged organic shops. But, do you seriously think that all that money spent on these items is doing any good for your hair, scalp, and overall health. Our study here might surprise you.
What Causes Dandruff?
Start with the basics – what is the root cause of your dandruff?
There can be multiple reasons behind dandruff, where the following are common amongst people of all ages:
- Dry skin is the most common cause of dandruff. Unfortunately, if this is the root cause of your dandruff, you might notice it get worse in the winter season.
- You may have to encounter dandruff if you don’t shampoo enough. Due to poor scalp hygiene, the natural oil accumulates and builds upon the skin, leading to dandruff.
- You are more prone to dandruff if you are allergic to some items. People are allergic various substances, including food items and external elements they may come into contact with. Hence, there are chances that your hair care products are to be blamed for your dandruff.
- It may be more than dandruff. Dandruff is sometimes caused by a medical condition called Seborrheic dermatitis. It affects all areas of the body where oil glands are present, including the scalp. This condition may show up as dandruff and redness of the scalp.
- Your dandruff may actually be yeast overgrowth. Malassezia is a form of fungus that lives on the scalp and skin of people. Although it is a natural process, some people may develop sensitivity to it, which can result in dandruff.

Adverse Effects of Anti-Dandruff Shampoos
In some people, anti-dandruff shampoos can cause skin irritation, dryness or oiliness of scalp or skin, and temporary hair loss. In case you observe any of these symptoms, it is highly recommended to immediately discontinue the use of the product and promptly consult your doctor. Hair discoloration may occur and can be reduced by carefully rinsing the hair thoroughly after each treatment. You may feel skin irritation or skin rash. If the shampoo is not of good quality or has the wrong proportion of ingredients, you can experience grey hair and hair thinning.
Less than 1 in 1000 people experience serious problems upon the use of anti-dandruff shampoos.
Rare side-effects may include eye irritation, acne, and skin inflammation (dermatitis). Flaking skin can also be caused by shampoo. Application site reactions include blistering, over-sensitivity (allergic) reactions, and general allergic reactions (over-sensitivity).
Many people using these shampoos do not have serious side effects. A severe allergic reaction to anti-dandruff shampoo is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling, or headache. Remember using anti-dandruff shampoo has adverse effects and may damage the quality of your hair as well.
